Sub, hoagie, hero, po-boy, or grinder… whatever you call it, these large, long bread rolls served hot or cold and stuffed with delicious combinations of meats, cheeses and vegetables are the perfect meal. This portable, easy-to-eat sandwich that requires no utensils pulls its roots from the Italian-American communities in the United States in the late 19th century. It got its nickname from the fact that its shape resembles a submarine.

We have some great subs at Ultimate California Pizza. We pulled inspiration from some of the greatest sub sandwich cultures around the country. Italian, Cuban, Polynesian, and more. We just made them our own. We focus on fresh-tasting bread, fresh delicious meats, and fresh vegetables because the key to any great sub is high-quality ingredients.
The first thing you should consider when creating a great sub is the roll you use. It holds the sandwich together, and it’s the first thing you bite into. Too much bread and the flavor of the meats, veggies, and cheeses get lost. Not enough bread and the sauce soaks through making a mess that defeats the purpose of a meal that doesn’t need utensils. If the roll is too skinny you have to skimp on the meat and toppings. No one wants that. The sub roll is very important!
On to the subs!
Let’s start with The Italian. This is the ultimate cold cut sub. Loaded with smoked ham, Genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, and then topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, fresh red peppers, and Stevie’s Italian dressing. This is a whole lot of a sub and it is worth every bite. The best way to describe the flavors of this sub is that it is smokey, sweet, savory, and spicy, all with a little bit of zest. You can never go wrong with an Italian Sub.
The next sandwich on our list is so popular that we wrote an entire blog on it a little while back. The Cuban is a glorious sandwich that goes far beyond just ham and cheese. It has a storied history that depending on who you speak with, can get pretty colorful and isn’t always truthful, but that doesn’t affect the flavors of this delicious masterpiece. As mentioned it is a glorified ham and cheese sandwich featuring smoked ham, pulled pork, Monterey jack, red onions, pickles, Stevie’s Italian dressing, and honey mustard. The Polynesian features oven-roasted chicken drizzled with teriyaki sauce, sweet golden pineapple, Swiss, hickory smoked crumbled bacon, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and mayo. Our Monterey Chicken features oven-roasted chicken, jalapenos, Monterey jack, and honey mustard, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions. The Cali Chicken Sub showcases homemade chicken salad, lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions. Our Buffalo Chicken has oven-roasted chicken drizzled with buffalo sauce, and Monterey jack, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and homemade ranch dressing. Finally, the most classic sub of them all, The Club is a classic club loaded with smoked turkey, smoked ham, hickory-smoked crumbled bacon, cheddar, and Swiss, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and mayo.
